“Shanzhai” is a Chinese word which means small mountain village. Over the time, it is now known as a word which describes products that have similar names to famous people or celebrities. It is also used to describe products with a similar name to famous brands. It was accepted a couple of years ago because of the cell phones produced by a small workshop in China named “Shanzai cell phones” which became popular in the market.

There are different Shanzhai products. It includes Shanzhai electronic products, Shanzhai movies, Shanzhai stars, and Shanzhai Spring Festival Gala.

If you are wondering where the concept of Shanzhai started, then, the answer to that is in the business world. Shanzhai copies those trendy products in the market, just like what Tian Huiqun said, Shanzhai can be compared to a computer virus, and it multiplies and multiplies.

Li Zonggui, a professor at Sun Yat-Sen University in south China’s Guangdong Province, said that Shanzhai represents non-mainstream ideas and innovations, and it’s also a new way for common people to express what they want. Is it really?

Tian Huiqun, a professor at the College of Art and Communication of Beijing Normal University confirmed that Shanzhai can be a big threat to innovation in China and continued tolerance to Shanzhai can, in fact, harm Chinese innovation.

The Shanzhai culture remains a controversy, but you should remember that even though it is a phenomenon that is already accepted, it should be delved into rather carefully.
