Creatives in China: Making Innovation Work

China has a rich history of world changing innovations: paper, the world’s first magnetic compass, silk, and even technology such as hydraulics. With the many innovations discovered in China, one would think that finding a creative career in the Asian country would be easy but that isn’t always the case.

How can someone go about acquiring a successful and innovative career in China?

The future class of creatives in China seems to be focused to three cities: Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. Another up and coming player is Wuhan – the capital of Hubei province. Located far from China’s financial coast, Wuhan officials are pushing for innovative businesses to move in and offering big incentives for those that do. Wuhan offers businesses three years of free office rentals, a one year interest free loan, and up to 15.8 million dollars to new companies moving in to the area. With perks like these, Wuhan’s economy is growing 12.5% annually and the city is shifting its expertise from manufacturing to technology and becoming more accepting of innovation as it does.

Last year it was announced that China is the world’s third biggest exporter of creative services and merchandise.

Diversity in education and varied work experiences makes a potential employee seem much more creative and, in turn, makes you more marketable when competing with others for innovative careers. One top trait employers are looking for when hiring creatives is international living or working experience. This suggests a willingness to take risks and someone who welcomes changes – both important aspects of any creative role.

The Chinese government is also taking responsibility in promoting creative growth. The government has been investing more money into research and development to increase innovation. A change in the educational system in China that promotes creativity and tolerates failure needs to occur in order to continue the momentum that the new creative market is currently experiencing.

Additionally, innovators should look for job openings in unexpected places.

Even though Facebook is currently blocked in China, it was recently announced that they were opening up a search for a Chinese Language Specialist. Startups and technological companies in China are also an important path to consider as a job resource. By broadening their efforts to unexpected employers and startups, innovators are more likely to find a job in the creative field quickly.

Companies also have an important part to play when it comes to hiring innovative employees. Laying out clear expectations of job roles in an organization is key to attracting and retaining creative talent. When an employee can see the potential for job growth they are more likely to stay loyal to their employer.

Working across all levels, creatives will need to understand the skills requires at different level of varied innovative careers, within a company. Making yourself willing to learn and take on other roles will make your career path more defined, allow your talent to grow and develop, and make you very valued within your company.
